Kuching, Sarawak — April 30th, 2025:
A remarkable life-saving incident took place at Kuching International Airport this week, highlighting once again the critical role of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public safety.
At around 11:30 AM on Wednesday, a 55-year-old man from Sibu collapsed suddenly in the domestic arrival hall after arriving from a morning flight. Witnesses report that a young woman nearby immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), performing continuous chest compressions for nearly 30 minutes — a heroic effort that bought precious time.
Airport staff deployed an AED on the scene. The device delivered two shocks, successfully converting the man’s life-threatening ventricular fibrillation into a stable rhythm. He was then rushed by ambulance to Sarawak General Hospital and later transferred to Timberland Medical Centre for further cardiac treatment. Medical reports confirm that the patient has regained full consciousness with no neurological impairment, a rare and fortunate outcome in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
According to the attending physicians, timely CPR and the swift application of the AED were crucial in saving the man’s life. Without immediate defibrillation, survival rates drop dramatically with each passing minute.
The patient’s family has since issued a public appeal to find the young lady who performed the life-saving CPR, wishing to express their gratitude personally. Anyone with information is urged to contact Madam Ngu at +60 13-804 6882.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of:
Accessible AEDs in public spaces
Bystander CPR training
Rapid emergency response protocols
