To help those suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, 2,000 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) will be installed around Melaka’s malls, recreational areas, and places of worship.

AEDs will be deployed gradually over the next two to three years, according to Melaka Council of Datuk (MDDNM) vice president Datuk Dr. Ahmad Zaini Mohd Amin, who is also the head of the Heart Safety Program.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training will also be provided to the general public who volunteer as first responders as part of the program, which was organized by MDDNM in cooperation with the Melaka Civil Defense Force (APM) and St. John Ambulance of Malaysia.

“So far, 60 people have been qualified as first responders through this initiative, and six AEDs have been installed in public locations, including four units at the Seri Negeri Complex.

After handing the AEDs to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali, he told reporters, “This is part of MDDNM’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment, and the devices are contributions from various parties in an effort to ensure that people who suffer a heart attack in public can be revived.”

28 State Legislative Assembly Development and Coordination Committee Offices (Japerun), according to Ahmad Zaini, would serve as training facilities for first responders to learn how to operate AEDs.

To increase the number of Melaka residents who have access to an AED in an emergency, he said, “We also invite anyone who wants to join in our CSR initiative.
