After the girl fainted in their Moncton home, her brother quickly thinking saved her life.
Logan Quinn has been praised as a hero after administering CPR on his sister Paige, who had suffered from cardiac arrest unexpectedly.
Quinn was at home with his family on February 14 when he heard a loud thump. He didn’t think much of it at the time, supposing his sister had simply dropped her phone, but he went to check on her immediately.
He came upon his 15-year-old sister, who was lying on the ground.
Quinn stated, “I walked over and said, ‘Paige, you have to get up,’ and she didn’t move.”
“When I noticed she was purple, I told my mom immediately about the situation which she wasn’t moving or breathing.”
Although the 24-year-old brother never had official CPR training, he stepped into action and administered chest compressions for over 10 minutes with the assistance of a 911 operator.
“I was aware of the crossing your fingers and pushing, and the operator said, ‘I’m going to get you to go, 1-2-3,’ and then she just got me to go, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, and I just kept doing that until the paramedics arrived.”
Quinn said it felt like an eternity, yet those ten minutes were key in saving her life.
“Well, all I can think of was praying she would pull through, start breathing again,” he added.
Paige was transferred to the IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax after being transported to a hospital in Moncton. Her family drove all the way over the border to check on her.
She was later diagnosed with long QT syndrome at the IWK (LQTS). Paige’s heart rhythms were irregular and abrupt as a result of the disease, which caused her to pass out.
Dr. Sandokh Dhillon, a pediatric cardiologist at the IWK, stated, “I think he saved his sister’s life and compliments to him.”
“I think he should be given a bravery reward since she might not be alive today if he hadn’t begun CPR.”
Dhillon wants CPR skills to be taught in schools so that people can save lives in an emergency.
“Teaching kids efficient CPR and how to use an AED requires only two to four hours each year.”
Quinn claims that their mother was diagnosed with the same disease in the hospital, despite the fact that she had never shown any symptoms. He stated that he plans to take CPR training.
Paige was released from the hospital on Friday after undergoing surgery and three weeks in the hospital.
“The doctors are blown away by how quickly she’s recovered.”
“I know she appreciates it; I don’t need to hear it from her.”
